Connect for Health Colorado Carriers
Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans must include the 10 Essential Health Benefits. Colorado does not require these major medical plans to include dental coverage. While many of the ACA-qualified plans include dental coverage, you have the option of purchasing a health plan without dental or pediatric dental coverage, or opt for a separate, standalone dental plan on the exchange.
Many of these carriers offer plans that can be combined with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Such HSA-qualified health plans provide tax-free savings to pay for a comprehensive list of qualified out-of-pocket expenses for high-deductible plans.
Colorado HealthOP is a nonprofit health insurance cooperative created exclusively for Colorado residents. Governed by members, this co-op health plan carrier invests funds that exceed operating costs into member incentives and other services. With Colorado-themed plan names like Bison, Bear, Bighorn and Bobcat, the carrier offers its members affordable options in the Gold, Silver, Bronze and Catastrophic coverage levels.
In most areas of the state, Colorado HealthOp offers the lowest-priced PPO plans available.
Kaiser Permanente Colorado
Kaiser Permanente Colorado is consistently ranked with the highest customer satisfaction ratings and is the largest nonprofit health insurance provider in Colorado. Established in 1945, Kaiser Permanente continues to offer consumers a fully integrated model of physicians and facilities that are all in-sync with the patient’s vital information for clarity of care.
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Colorado (KFHP CO) offers a large number of plan options across Gold, Silver and Bronze metal tiers, as well as Catastrophic plans for those who qualify.
In nearly all parts of Colorado, Kaiser offers the lowest monthly premium available. Since Kaiser’s plan network is an HMO, be sure to check to verify that your desired physician is a Kaiser provider if that is a concern for you.
Rocky Mountain Health Plans
Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RMHP) has been providing quality health insurance exclusively in Colorado for more than 30 years, so it knows the area’s residents and their health care needs. It offers statewide PPO plans and three regional HMO’s (Denver, Colorado Springs and Mesa County).
Cigna – MyCigna Health Plans
Cigna health plans have remained the popular choice through the years for individuals and families looking for affordable preventive and wellness options. The company’s MyCigna health plans offer Gold, Silver and Bronze ACA-qualified plans; Cigna also offers HSA-qualified options.
For people experiencing large medical bills, Cigna's Health Flex 1900 PPO Gold plan most often offers coverage with the lowest possible out-of-pocket spending limits (with certain restrictions on non-preferred brand name prescriptions).
Humana Health Plans
Known for its competitive rates and exceptional customer service, Humana Health Insurance plans have long been a popular choice for Coloradans. Now offering ACA-qualified health plans, Humana provides even more preventive services for individuals and families.
Humana exchange plans are HMOs, so be sure to check that your providers are in the Humana HMO network. You can enroll in a Humana PPO outside the Connect for Health Colorado exchange, at a higher premium (typically 30 to 35 percent higher than HMOs).
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield/HMO Colorado
A long-recognized leader in health insurance, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Colorado offers its HMO Colorado ACA-qualified health plans on the exchange. Anthem’s HMO Colorado includes metal tier plans in the Gold, Silver, Bronze and Catastrophic categories.
Anthem offers solely HMO plans on the Connect for Health Colorado exchange, so if you wish to see a particular doctor, make sure ahead of time that he or she is in your Anthem HMO network. Anthem PPO plans are also available outside the exchange, typically at premiums of 30 to 35 percent higher.
UnitedHealthcare – All Savers Individual Plans
UnitedHealthcare (UHC) offers All Savers ACA plans that offer all four metal plans (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze) plus a Catastrophic plan as well that will satisfy coverage for those who had their plans cancelled or are under the age of 30. Also offered are HSA-qualified health plans.
Note that UHC All Savers plans are HMO network-based. These on-exchange plans do not include access to the carrier’s larger PPO network.
Colorado Choice Health Plans
Offering Bronze, Silver and Gold plans on the exchange, Colorado Choice also offers the Catastrophic option for adults under 30 and those who had their 2013 plans cancelled. HSA-qualified plans are also available.
Access Health Colorado
Access Health Colorado is offered by the nonprofit and local New Health Ventures, Inc. The company explains it was “created by Coloradans for Coloradans” to offer affordable options in Gold, Silver and Bronze ACA-qualified health plans locally.
Denver Health Medical Plan (Elevate)
Denver Health was established in 1977 and serves the Denver area with renowned specialized medical care among its respected levels of care. The Denver Health Elevate plans are now offered on the Connect for Health Colorado exchange in the form of basic and expanded Gold- and Silver-tier plans.
