Temporary short-term health insurance is a good option for people who are looking for low-cost health insurance while between permanent policies. Short term medical policies offer lower premiums than permanent policies, but can only be held for a maximum of six months at a time.

Short Term Temporary Insurance Rates and Application

At ColoHealth, we represent many companies, and search through the competition in order to find our clients the best coverage at the lowest rates possible.  The lowest rates if you wish to pay monthly are with Time Insurance.  You can get an Instant Quote, and securely Apply Online.  Or if you'd rather, you can open the Brochure, Application, and Rate chart, and send in the application on your own.

Here are some of the features of the Assurant plan that stand out:

  1. Prescription drug card - All Assurant Health short-term customers receive a prescription drug card providing substantial savings on many prescriptions and automatic claims submission from participating pharmacies.

  2. One-time deductible - only one deductible per policy period, regardless of the number of claims. Many other plans provide for per-cause deductibles.

  3. Next-day coverage – you can apply by paper or online and receive coverage as early as the next day.

  4. Customers choose your own doctors and hospitals - Assurant Health plans guarantee that you can keep your primary care physicians. Some other plans charge a penalty if you visit a provider outside the insurer’s network.

  5. Coverage for exactly as long as you need it - You can choose the exact number of days you want to be insured. Some other companies sell whole months of coverage only.

  6. Greater lifetime maximum - Assurant Health STM plans allow for a lifetime maximum of $2 million or $5 million, compared to $1 million for most other short-term plans

  7. HSA Compatible - Many Assurant Health STM plans, including all plans with 100% coinsurance option and deductibles of $2500 or higher are HSA compatible.

How Temporary Coverage Works

With temporary, or short-term medical insurance, you choose a deductible of $1000, $2500, $3500*, or $5000.  After your deductible, the plan pays 80% (or 50% if chosen with $3500 deductible) of all covered expenses (including doctor visits and prescription drugs) up to $5000, and 100% thereafter up to a lifetime maximum of $2 million or $5 million on the six month plan.

There is also a 100% plan available, with deductible choices of $2500, $3500, and  $5000 deductibles, depending on your state.

One family deductible: if the $1,000 or higher deductible is selected, only one deductible needs to be satisfied by all covered family members.

The length of coverage option on a six-month plan is from 30 to 180 days.

Short term health insurance is non-renewable.  However, after six months you may apply for an additional temporary policy if 1) no claims were incurred under a previous policy, 2) there has been no significant change in health.

The actual policy itself sets forth in detail the rights and obligations of both you and the insurance company.

Optional Benefits

You may also gain additional peace of mind by adding any of the following three optional benefits to your Time Short Term Medical Plan - Accident Medical Expense, Term Life Insurance, or the Dental-Vision Savings Plan.

Accident Medical Expense

This optional benefit can be added to give you first dollar coverage in the event of an accident.  This pays 100% up to the amount of your deductible for treatment of any accidental injury before any co-payments, deductible, or coinsurance is applied.  Treatments must occur within 90 days of the accident.

If this rider is selected, all family members on the policy are covered.

Term Life Insurance

You can choose an optional $25,000 term life insurance benefit that lasts the duration of your Short Term Medical Plan.  Coverage can be obtained for any primary insured over the age of 18, and their spouse, up to age 63 ½, as long as both are covered on the Short Term policy.  No dependent term life coverage is available.

Dental-Vision Savings Plan

This discount program can be added to Short Term Medical Plans in the following states - Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.  Simply present your card to a participating dental or vision provider to receive discounts up to 50% on almost all dental services, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other retail items available through a network of more than 24,000 dentist and 9,000 eye care professionals nationwide.  Discounts vary by providers.

This discount plan, which costs a family just $9.95 per month, also provides members with 25% to 50% discounts from a catalog of vitamin and nutritional supplements.

No HMOs or PPOs

With short term health insurance plans, you can visit the doctor or hospital of your choice. No referrals are needed, and no out-of-network penalties are incurred. Some plans, though, do have networks which will enable you to reduce your medical bills by going to doctors or hospitals that are part of the network.
