Ever since the inappropriately named “Affordable Care Act” (now primarily known as Obamacare) became effective in 2014, individual and family health insurance rates have been skyrocketing. People who purchase these plans are typically small business owners, self-employed individuals, or the remaining family members not covered by the primary breadwinner’s company coverage.

Families that just a few years ago might have been paying $400-$500 a month for good coverage with perhaps a $1000 deductible are now commonly paying $1200 – $1500 a month or more. In a couple of weeks, the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) for health insurance will begin. Coloradoans are bracing themselves for what is shaping up to be a tale of two tragedies: 50-60% increases in monthly premium costs and the mass exodus of enough individual insurance companies to leave some areas with only one carrier from which to chose.

Faith-Based Plans Set to Become a Popular Alternative to Obamacare

The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) for health insurance is coming up, starting November 1 of this year. It’s the annual 3 month period during which people can obtain health insurance, or change from one plan to another. During the rest of the year, you must qualify for what’s known as a special enrollment period to change your health coverage.

I’m expecting that, just like last year, we’ll be spending a lot of time during this OEP helping our existing clients get new coverage for two reasons. Either their carrier has pulled out of the Colorado individual market altogether, or they can’t afford to pay the premiums associated with their previous plan. At one time I thought we’d never have an alternative for this folks, but this year things are different. read more
